Happy Tail: Shelby

Hi Heavenly Hearts,
It’s been a couple of weeks since I last wrote, so I thought I’d touch base again. As you can see, Shelby is doing great and looking good! Our daughter’s dog, Sadie, was here for a couple of days, it was the second time the dogs have been together so it took less time for them to get used to each other. Luckily I had my camera in hand when Shelby decided to give Sadie a kiss! The look on Sadie’s face is priceless! Obviously, she was surprised!
We’ve finally found a toy that Shelby likes! It’s one of those knot ropes disguised as a tiger. She’ll usually toss him around a little, then chew on his head a little, then put her head on him to sleep. She’s not real interested in the tennis balls yet, although she seems to enjoy watching me throw them and then watching me fetch them too
She’s such a good girl, such a sweetheart. I know I keep saying it, but we still can’t believe how lucky we are! The vet and his staff and the people at the pet food store love her ~ no one can believe she is a rescue. I wish she could tell us her story. We’ll never know, of course, but I like to think she wasn’t treated badly, and that whoever had her would be glad to know she’s safe and loved.
~Cheri

Dear Heavenly Hearts,
Shelby joined our family in July 2010, and although I’ve kept her foster Mom updated, I thought it was time to send our own Happy Tail.
Shelby has been great with us since the first day we brought her home, but she is definitely settled in now, with her own sofa, and the prize spot for sleeping in the center of our bed (RemBrat the cat is still a bit miffed!). She goes with us to the Nature’s Feed pet food store where everyone adores her, and is a sweetheart for the groomers, too!
We were especially proud of her at Christmas when we had two 4 year old boys here–since our own kids are adults now, we hadn’t had little children around and weren’t quite sure how Shelby would feel about it, but she was absolutely wonderful! She’s usually pretty laid back, and stayed true-to-form. She walked up to greet the kids with her tail wagging, but didn’t jump on them, or bark, or run away…she just sat down to let them pet her, and then went and laid down close by. She was willing to play, but never got too excited. Since the boys haven’t been around dogs much, either, we of course kept a close eye on them, too, so that Shelby wouldn’t get her tail or ears pulled! Everyone there was impressed with her!
It took us a couple years to finally be able to open our hearts to another dog after losing our 14 year old girl, Snapple, but Shelby walked right in and found her own place in our hearts. She has been such a joy, and so much fun, and it feels like she’s been in our family forever.
We think of Heavenly Hearts and Shelby’s foster Mom Kathy often, and are so thankful that there are people like all of you in the world to rescue these wonderful dogs, and hopefully find forever homes for them. We will always be grateful that you let us bring Shelby home; she has made our world a better, brighter place.
I hope you enjoy the pictures. My daughter brought her dog Sadie over to meet Shelby shortly after we got her home, and Shelby gave her new cousin a big kiss! (Looks like Sadie was surprised!)
Thank you again, and we wish all of you a wonderful 2011!
Cheri and Erv Nevitt
p.s. I was thrilled to see the Happy Tail from Dot, one of Shelby’s ‘Pasta Pups’! Shelby couldn’t believe how much she’d grown!!
